The captain of the Mendoza reports that a seaman named John Taragram fell overboard and was drowned during the voyage. The Contagious Diseases Apt. His Worship the Mayor hks given notice of his intention to move in the direction of bringing the Contagious Diseases into force. H.M. s.s Nelson. H.M. s.s. Nelson arrived off tho Great Barrier on Saturday and engaged in gun practice. She has not yet come into harbor. Something New. Wellington, Td-day. Large crowds of people visited the Maniponri last evening to witness the display of the electric light. Shipwreck and Loss of Life. Gisborne,. To-day. A native policeman arrived last night from the East Cape, reporting the total loss of the ketch Jessie, loaded for this port with timber. All hands were. lost. The vessel was insured for 1400. The timber remained in the hold of the vessel, which was driven ashore a few miles north of the East Cape. Tried to Throw Him Overboard. Wanganui, To-dsy.
Two seamen, named Boyd and Redmond, assaulted Captain Pope, on Board the steamer Tui, in the Wanganui river, on Saturday night, and tried to throw him overboard. They wore brought up at the It. M. Court this morning and re* manded. Censured. The assessors gave judgment in re the collision of the schooner E. and U. Cameron, of Lyttelton, and the steamer Clyde, trading to Patea, blaming both captains, and censuring Captain Ronner of the steamer. The certificates to be returned and costs paid equally by each captains. Fire at Tomahawk. Dunedin, To-day. A seven-roomed house at Tomahawk, occupied by Mrs Coombie, was burned to the ground The building was insured in the New Zealand, and the furniture in ,the National, for LIOO Arrested on Suspicion. On the arrival of the cutter Jane, the police arrested Charles - .Everett- and Daniel Moore on suspicion of being concerned in an hotel robbery at Invercargill. L3l were found on them.
