The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas, et Prevalebit. THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 1882. Walk Up.

TOWN EDITION. [lssued at 4.40 p. m. j

Mr Ivess, like the accomplished “ Modern Major-General” of the comic opera, has “ a pretty taste for strategy.” His latest idea has been to invite Mr W. H. Pilliet, lately so prominently before the public in connection with the notorious Stanmore election petition case, to be present on his platform this evening, on the occasion of his final appeal to the “ free and independent electors of Wakanui.” Mr Pilliet is a man after Mr Ivess’s own heart, but, apart from this consideration, the fact that he has lately excited more attention in the eyes of the people of New Zealand than he ever occasioned in his life before, or probably ever will again, was quite sufficient to induce the “ untried politician ” to get such a prominent “ fellow-worker in the cause,” to stand by his side to-night. He is to be exhibited to the public, in fact, like any other curiosity, and may reasonably be expected to draw a crowded house. People will naturally feel interested to see the man who has undergone the trying ordeal lately experienced by Mr Pilliet, They may not admire him or his views, but they will flock to see him as they would any other sight. The thing is altogether too transparent, and yet we are told that Mr Pilliet has been invited to be present this evening at Mr Ivess’ meeting, “by the Liberals of Wakanui !” Surely Mr Ivess made a mistake when he penned that paragraph. He should have spoken in the singular and not in the plural !
