Questions Put to Persons Offering to Vote. 29. —The Returning Officer may, and if so required by any scrutineer, shall, before allowing any person to vote, put to him the following Questions : (a) Are you the person whose name appears as A.B. on the electoral roll now in force for the Electoral District of Wakanui ? (b) And in the case of a person who proposes to vote in respect of a residential qualification—Do you still reside in the Electoral District of Wakanui ? (c) Have you already voted in the present election in the Electoral District of Wakanui ? If any person shall knowingly and willfully give a false answer to either of the above questions he shall be deemed guilty of an offence, and shall be liable, on conviction, to a penalty not exceeding £SO, And any person not answering such questions, or not answering the first and second in the affirmative and the third in the negative, shall not be permitted to vote. CLAUSES 10 AND 17 OF THE CORRUPT PRACTICES PREVENTION ACT, 1881. Procurement of Voting by Unqualified Voters to be Illegal Practice. 16, —lf any person induces or procures any person to vote at any election whom at the time he knows to be disqualified or or prohibited, whether under this Act or otherwise, from voting at such election, be shall be guilty of an illegal practice. Punishment of Illegal Practice on Conviction. 17. —A person guillty of an illegal practice shall, on summary conviction, be liable to a fine not exceding £IOO. And be not capable during a period of three years from the date of his conviction — (a) Of being registered as an elector or voting at any election in New Zealand, whether it be a Parliamentary election or an election for a public office within the meaning of this Act. This is to notify that at a Special Meeting of the Council of the Borough of Ashburton, held on the 12th day of June instant, it was resolved to REPEAL By-law No. 55 and to ADOPT in lien thereof the following By-law, that is to say—“Jf any cattle 'shall at any time he found feeding, grazing, or wandering in any street or public place within the Borough, whether the same shall or shall not be attended by or in the charge of any person or persons the owner thereof shall be guilty of an offence, and notwithstanding the liability of any person to a penalty under this by-law any officer of the said Council or any police constable may seize and impound such cattle. And the word “owner’’ shall include the person having the lawful charge, control, or management of such cattle. ” And this is to further notify that a Meeting of the said Council will be held at the Council Chambers, in Burnett street, Ashburton, on MONDAY, the 10th day of July next, at seven o’clock in the evening, to confirm the said resolution.
