MR IVESS AT CHERTSEY.
To the Editor. Sir, —Please excuse my troubling you with this short note, but I wish to give your readers a slightly different report of Mr Ivess’s meeting at Chertsey than he has done. There were 19 people in the room, a little more than half of whom were electors. About half a dozen people were asked to take the chair, and at last Mr Honor, a new resident took it. In reply to a question why Mr Ivess had changed his opinions about taxing large estates and quoting Sealey’s pamphlet, he absolutely denied having changed his ideas, or ever having quoted Sealey. You know whether there is any truth in this statement. With respect to the no-confidence motion not being seconded, my son thought, as I was the proposer, he had bettor not second it; the other supporters of Mr Saunders had sufficient private reasons for not doing so. There were seven hands held up for the resolution that was carried and five to the contrary. Where the “ roars of laughter ” and “ great applause” came from I don’t know. The whole of Mr Ivess’ report is, in fact, a good sample of Mr Ivess’ style.—l am, etc., Thos. W. Wilkinson.
