The actual numbers of miners on strike at Pittsburg is 60,000. The strike is likely to largely affect trade. The refrigerating apparatus of the Potisi has collapsed. The vessel landed consignments of fresh stores at Plymouth. London, June 5.
A gun explosion happened on hoard the ship Swiftsure, at Madiera. One seaman was killed and several others were injured more or less seriously. London, June 6.
Lord Granville stated in Leeds that England gladly had assented to the conference of Powers proposed by France; and said Government considered the irontlads despatched to Alexandria an adequate protection for the European population. The safety of the Suez Canal was provided for, and England was pledged to uphold Prince Teuike, and had requested the Sultan to summon Arabi Bey to Staraboul. Government was not aware that the Sultan was intriguing as alleged. The Marquis of Salisbury expressed the conviction that the measures of the Government in view of the present crisis were totally inadequate. London, June 7.
The French Chamber of Deputies parsed a vote of confidence in M. De Froycinet, in regard to the action adopted by the French Cabinet, in proposing that a diplomatic conference be held held at Stamboul with the view of a peaceful solution of the Egyptian difficulty. lathe coarse of his speech in the Chamber on the Egyptian question, Gambotta ridiculed the proposed diplomatic conference at Stamboul.

Arabi Bey has given guarantees for the maintenance of order ponding the determinations of the diplomatic conference. The Su’tan reassured the Khedive of his friendly intentions in the present crisis. The object of the proposed confeienco is to compel the Porte to accede to European control over Egyptian finances, i'he Sultan accordingly sent a commissioner to Oario to induce Arabi Bey to withdraw m
order that the conference may be rendered superfluous. If the Porte declines to acquiesce in the European control it England and France, or of England, Italy will act under the control as mandatary. The conference will be abandoned if the commission despatched by the Porto succeeds in arranging a peaceful and satisfactory solution of the difficulty.
