RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

SOUTH RAKAIA— Yesterday.

(Before Mr Whiteford, R. M., and Messrs Holmes, Coster, and Mackie, J.P.’s.) Taking a Traction Engine Over the Rakaia Bridge Under Stkam. —N. Eden was charged with the above offence by tbs Railway Department, for whom Mr Blood appeared. Evidence was given by the bridge keeper that ho had warned defendant that lie was acting contrary to the Public Works Act, 18GC. Fined L 3 and costs. Cruelty to A Horse.— Joseph Bannaly was charged with cruelty to a horse, and also with firing off a gun on the Alford Forest road. Defendant pleaded guilty to both charges, and was fined L 5 on the first and 10s on second, with costs in both cases. Assault Cases. —E. Lake summoned N. Walsh for assaulting him, and the charge being (roved, defendant was fined 10* and costs. —O. Lake and E. Lake, summoned W. J. Walsh for assault. The case was dismissed. Stopping his Grog. —Jane Rutter informed the Pencil that her husband was an habitual drunkard, and asked for an order prohibiting publicans from supplying him with liqtrir.—Order gianted, good for twelve months. Unregistered Does. — The following were fined 10s each for having unregistered dogs in their possession: -W. Merton, James Santy, W. Street, H. McLean, J, Thomson, and J. Bonchol. . Breach op the Peace. —J. Walker and J. Thompson were charged with fighting in - the street/ Thompson was also charged with using obsceno language. Walker was dismissed, and his companion ■ fined 20s on each’ charge. CIVIL OASES. Abraham v. Murdoch. —Claim, LI .i 6s, for a horse supplied. Plaintiff nonsuited. ' ' Jsgo v. Gardiner.—Claim, for wages Bipd mopey lent, LIOO. Defendant did s . not appear. Judgment for plaintiff for Mhl amount. ■n.

'Hardr and o>>. v. Goldsmith. —Claim, L 23 5d Bd, fur sold and delivered. Judgment for ulaintiff with costa. Edward Lake v. N. Walsh.-Mr Blood for plaintiff, Mr Purnell for defendant. Claim Ll 7 18s 4d, for wages. The defendant had paid LI 13s 7d into Court, and had a set off for L2 8s 9J. Judgment for L2 8s in addition to money paid into Court. The Court then adjourned.
