It has been definitely ascertained that no serious damage has been done to the settlors by the late floods, owing to timely precautions taken in removing stock. Messrs Wylie, Bloomfield, and others have brought their stock back. The greatest damage has been to the. country roads and the Orari bridge, the latter being in a hopeless state. The rain and floods have now quite subsided. The brigantine Isabella, from Oaraaru, is high and dry at Murivai, but her cargo hap been saved.

The Floods in Napier. Napier, To-day. The floods are subsiding. The beach is strewn with drift wood, dead sheep, cattle, and horse!. Only one loss of life is reported, that of Martin Shannassy, who was drowned by being washed off his horse while crossing a creek. The coaches from Hastings and Taradale are just able to coma into town this morning, and many parts along the road are covered with water above the wheels. The railway line between Farndon and Hastings is seriously damaged, and the traffic cannot be resumed till Monday, at the earliest. Taranaki Iron Company. New Plymouth, To-day. At a meeting of the Iron Company last night, directors were elected, Mr Rifcso (late of Canterbury) being one of them. It was proposed to put the works in order and to get a competent manager as soon as possible, so as to carry on operations. The Fire Fiend. Patba, To-day, The boiling-down works of Prouso Bros., at Kakaramea, were burnt down last evening through stray sparks igniting the shingles of the roof. The building, which had not been used for soma months, was insured in the Standard Office for L 250. Gold, Gold. Dunedin', To-day. The Cromwell Company obtained 220 ounces from 300 tons of stone. A Narrow Escape. A man named John Kilpatrick, in attempting to move from one tramcar to another fell. He was struck on the right side by the hind car. His principal injury is a severe thigh wound.
