NEWS PROM THE COAST.

The Woodstock Rush. New Claims Opening Daily. Excellent Prospects. The Population Increasing. [per press association.] Hokitika, Yesterday. The population at Woodstock rush continues steadily to increase, and new claims, with payable prospects, are being opened daily. Considerably over a thousand miners are on the field. Paddocks and whims are in active course of construction, and water is expected to be brought on to the field in the course of four weeks. Two sawmills are actively employed. Three new publicans’ licenses have been granted, and the number of stores is increasing.

We collate the following items from our West Coast exchanges : A letter from the mine manager ef the Just-in-Time Company states that the stone in the new find looks exceedingly well.

In the Wealth of .Nations, the shaft or winze is still going through a good body of payable stone, with every appearance of permanency. Some surface prospecting has been done during the last clay or two on the course of this stone further north ; that is the direction in which the most of the Company’s ground extends, The winze is going down near the southern boundary, and some stone was cut in a trench which appears of the same nature as that now being raised from the winze. The new find is naturally enough considered a continuation of the former discovery, as the relative bearings of the two correspond exactly with the course of the new lode. Keep-it-Dark.—During the week some very good stone has been sen tto the m il! from the south stopes, and this afternoon (20th) an exceedingly rich patch came in, which is consiclerd the best ever yet found in the mine. This will help to make the week’s return better than anticipated, and shares are being sought after at an advanced price.

On the 28th' the Ttiverton correspondent of of the Grey River Argus wired : . The extraordinary large return of 1,855 ozs. of amalgam was obtained for the week’s crushing of 192 tons of stone from f the Keep-it-Dark claim. This amount, added to the previous week’s ordinary yield, on being retorted, gave 830ozs. sdwts. of gold. 1920z3. had been retorted from the previous fortnight’s crushing, so that the total return for the month is 1,0220z5. sdwts. retorted gold, which will enable the directors to declare a 3s dividend at their meeting to-morrow night. The grand patch of stone which was being obtained during Friday and Saturday has caused quite an excitement in the district, but only a* few transactions have taken place in scrip, as all the local shareholders are firmly holding on, and the outside holders of stock had timely notice of a rise.—Golden Treasure : Sixty-four czs. of retorted gold was brought in this evening. The Golden Arch (Italian Gully) people are still following the gold-bearing stone recently met with on the surface and south of old working. The show of gold is promising. The €h-ey River Argus' No Town correspondent writes :—Several parties have struck gold at the new rush at Abe’s Gully. Southworth and party, joining > the prospectors on the north side, obtained half a dwt. to the dish immediately they came on the washdirt. They at any rate have a good claim. The weather during the past few weeks has been so extraordinarily wet that little outside work could bo done, and it cannot be said that the place has got a fair trial as yet.
