Jack Rebellious.— There was almost a mutiny on board the Duke of Wellington, flagship at Portsmouth, recently. Several hundred men were about to be drafted for the Euryalus and other ships, and in the dinner hour the hands, joined -by some blue-jackets of the flagship, commenced to sing and dance, conducting themselves in a most disorderly manner. They formed into a body on the upper deck, where they defied the efforts of the ship’s police to restore quiet, and even the commander failed to obtain obedience to his orders. The noise and confusion could be heard for a considerable distance up the harbor. The ship’s corporals were directed to disperse the men, but the attitude of the crowd of seamen then became such that it would have been impossible for the corporals to cope with them. Finally all hands were directed to. fall in on the upper deck, and six of the rioters were then singled out and placed under arrest. The disorder lasted half an hoqr, and at one time threatened to become very serious. The trouble originated in the unwillingness to be drafted for the particular ships mentioned. Fish in Gam \bu Harbor.— The Oamaru Times says : The small. fish caught in the Oamaru harbor are finding ready markets in both Dunedin and Christchurch, as well as in the maws of large fish that hover on the outskirts of the “ pack.” The other day a groper was seen to make for the landing at Macandrew’s wharf, and reclining on one of the steps allowed himself to be captured without a struggle. It was found on examination to have gorged itself with sprats to such an extent that it was powerless to move. A number of cod have also fallen victims to their ravenousness, and are now floating about the bay on their backs. The small fish are now swimming deeper, no doubt either for the purpose of evading the gulls which cover the surface of the water, or preparatory to making a move to other feeding grounds. At all events, the fi-h are more difficult to catch than they were at first. Policeman, to group of small boys: “ Come, now, move on ! There’s nothing the matter hero.” Sarcastic boy : “Of course there isn’t. If there was yon wouldn’t be here. ” ■ o The following appears in the “agony co lumn ” of an American exchange “John, come back ; all is forgiven 1 Pa kicked the wrong man.
