An attempt was>tnade to upset a tramcar near Campbell ton, at 6 o’clock on the morning of the Bth, when some persons l unknown placed logs of ironbarfc across . the nils, in two places. The first obstruction was passed oyer safely, and the second was observed in time, bo no damage resulted. The police are-inquir-ing “into the matter. ' A telegraph messenger was accidentally killed at Mood’s wool stores yesterday, when a bale of wool fell upon l}im. The Melbourne Australian Committee of the Irish Land League held an indignation meeting on the Bth to express their detestation of the recent murders in Dublin, and repudiating political assassination. The Ministry also sent a telegram of condolence to Mr Gladstone. Two yonng men, Langley and Beyder,, have been committed for trial for obtaining money under pretence of being medical practitioners. Forty-five persons are under treatment at Mount Poole diggings. Fever, scurvy, ophthalmia, and dysentery are the chief complaints. Dr Wilkie reports that none of the patients are able to pay foj medicine.' * Archibald Forbes arrived on Saturday, and was entertained at a banquet in the Athenaeum Club. Mr Dailey occupied the, chair. Sir John Robertson and others werepresent. The former proposed the health of the guest in most eloquent terms. Mr Forbes, in replying, said he was an Australian journalist, having been Special Correspondent of the Argus during the Rnsso-Turkish campaign. The _ banquet passed off with much enthusiasm.
