THE LATTER-DAY SAINTS IN LONDON.

The activity of Mormon agents eager to gain emigrants for Utah continues lltiabated ill this country; says the Home JVewi. But it will have received a Shafp chefcfe in the recent riotous profcfcfedings in the north of London. It seeths that a number of so-called apostles Mormon elders, in other words—both male and female, paraded tamdfen Town in procession distributing handbills. Now and again the leaders halted and addressed a few Seasonable words to the crowd, accompanied by a warm invitation to attend a Mormon iheeting in a public hall. A ihob soon collected, and just now London mobs are somewhat unruly, not

Thebystanders soon passed from jeers and gibes to more tangible . insults, and ended by violently assaulting the “ saints.” The latter, however, gained the hall of meeting, whither the mob followed them, broke in, stormed the platform, smashed the furniture, and put the Mormons to flight. The streets of London nowadays offer many curious spectacles. Now it is a procession of interested fanatics, such as those whose march was so bad ly i n terfered with ; now a long string of “ sandwich men ” in the strangest disguises. Not long ago the enterprising lessee of a theatre at which “ Pluto ” was being performed advertised the piece by sending out his myrmidons carrying red-hot pokers and other insignia of his Satanic Majesty. This was followed by a procession of Afghan tramps with pallid faces and sham beards under their white ; turbans, an advertisement intended to draw crowds to the music-hall perform- | ance of the capture of Kabul.
