In the House of Lords this evening, Earl Granville, referring to the present position of affairs in Egypt, stated that England and France had mutually decided upon a line of action which should be taken in certain contingencies, but his Lordship hoped that peace and prosperity would yet be secured to that country without resorting to force of arms. The Times to-day, in reference to the state of affairs in Egypt, states that in the event of moral influence failing in that country, a force,of Turkish gensd’armes will land and seize Arabi Pasha. T?he Australian Cricketers in EnglandLondon, May 15. The first match of the Australian cricketers in England was commenced to-day at Oxford against eleven of the local University. The weather was fine, and there was a lively wicket. The Australians went in first, and the innings closed for 362. The following were the highest scores ; —Massie, 206 ; Giffen, 19; Jones, 39; Garrett, 41; Palmer, rB. Murdoch was bowled for nil. Massie batted splendidly, but was badly missed early in his innings. The play of the Australians was much admired, and the fielding of the University players was excellent. At the close of the day’s play the Oxford Eleven had two wickets down for 5 runs. The Bent Question. London, May 16. In the House of Commons last night a Bill was introduced by the Government for dealing with the question of payment of arrears of rent in Ireland. The measure provides that the Irish Church surplus should be appropriated for the purpose of clearing tenants of their liabilities. The Church Fund will thus be entirely exhausted. The Price of his FreedomIt has transpired from a reliable source that before his release from Kilmainham Gaol, Mr Parnell promised that agrarian outrages in Ireland should cease, and undertook to co-operate with the Government towards that end. The united squadron of the French and English ironclads is now on its way to Alexandra. It is now definitely known that the Khedive has the suppc rc of a large section of the people and also of the Porte in the present difficulty with Arabi Aasha and the Nationalist party.
