TOWN EDITION. [lssued at 5.40 p. m. j
The people of the United States have at length succeeded in putting a stop to the influx ol the detested Celestial for ten years at all events. When a Bill was passed by both Houses of the American Legislature some few weeks back, having (or its object the exclusion of the yellow race from the Land of the Free, President Arthur exercised his right of veto, and refused to assent to the measure. But the representatives of the people, knowing how strong was the public feeling at their back, at once passed another measure—slightly modified, it is true —having for its object the exclusion of the Chinese for a period of ten years, and on this occasion President Arthur, awed, no doubt by the strong public feeling we have mentioned, at once gave his assent to the Bill, and it has become law in the Uuited States. No one who has seen the evils which have resulted from the flood of Asiatic immigration to America will do other than congratulate our American cousins on the success of their efforts to stop for a time this undesirable class of immigration, which was fast pauperising the working people of the vast continent. Of course, we do not for a moment mean to say that a limited number of Chinamen is an evil in a new country; on the contrary, up to a certain limit, their presence is beneficial. But that limit, we venture to think, has long since been reached in the United States, qnd, fully aware of that fact, the people would no longer be denied, and we are very glad to find that the President thought proper to recede from the position which he had taken up, and declined to longer oppose what was undoubtedly the will of the great majority of the denizens of the United States.
