The Auckland Suporicntendout of Police, Mr Thomson, proceeds to Australia ou Tuesday for the purpose of bringing back Harges, the defaulter. It appears the latter's Adelaide creditors are endeavoring to have him declared a bankrupt, so that they may impound the money found in his possession when arrested. An Agent in a Mess. Napier, To-day. The local agent of the Mercantile and Bankruptcy Gazette for publishing under the heading of “ bankruptcy,” a deed of arrangement by a debtor, has been threatened with proceedings for LSOO damages, on the ground that the arrangement deed does not come within the bankruptcy class. An entrance was effected through a window, and three LI notes taken from a cash-box. j Nothing else was disturbed. There is no clue to the burglar. Fire Enquiry. The inquiry will be held to-morrow into the recent fire at Chew’s buildings. The College. The College Governor has decided to j wait on Government, asking assistance for the purpose of erecting a new wing to the I college and establishing a Girls’ High School on a similar principle to those in other cities. I Burned to Death. Christchurch, To-day. Yesterday evening a cottage occupied by a man named Downey, at Prebbleton, was destroyed by fire, and one of his daughters, aged three years, was burned to death. Downey and his wife were away from home at the time. The cause of the fire is unknown. Cut off by the Flood. Lyell, To-day. Owing to a flood and consequent isolation by communications with the seaboard, Lyell has been cut off for the past thirty days. It is reduced to a condition bordering on famine. One For the Ministry. A public meeting last night carried a resolution strongly condemning the administration in consequence of the delay in the construction of a bridge at Inangahua Junction, where teams are continuously being stuck up. Suspicious Fire. Dunedin, To-day.
A cottage in Hanover street, occupied by John Marshall, carpenter, was discovered to be on fire last night. The family wore all absent. Circumstances point to a clear case of incendiarism. The property was insured for £2OO. Trifling damage was done.
