AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
The s. s. Arawata, which arrived yesterday at the Bluff from Melbourne, brings the following interesting items of intelligence;—
Burns has been committed for trial for the Deep Lead murder. The evidence is quite circumstantial. The headless trunk of the victim was found some time ago.
Applications are being received from diflerent parts of the colony for permission to establish new Volunteer corps, but nothing will be done until the reorganisation of the force, when some of the existing corps will probably be disbanded.
Information has been received from England that a box containing fifteen hundred sovereigns was lost from the Potosi, and all efforts to trace it were ineffectual.
At a recent meeting in favor of the persecuted Russian Jews'L6oo was subscribed in town.
