As the outcome of the several Conservative meetings which have been held during the past few days to consider the polit'cal situation, Sir Michael Hicks-Beach will on Monday next, in I accordance with resolutions come to at | the meetings, demand in the House of Commons from the Government a full statement as to their entire Irish policy. Should the declaration be deemed inadequate, Sir Michael HicksBeach will, it is announced, propose a vote of censure on the Government. The Ship of the Age. The first prize at the International Shipwright's Exhibition, now being held, has been awarded to the Orient Company's new steamer Austral. The Times in a leading article on the Exhibition refers to the decision of the judges, and concludes as follows :—" Whether we look upon the Austral as a triumph of size, luxury, and speed, or in the last resort as a ship of war, she is in every way the ship of the age." The Irish Trouble. 1 Serious disturbances occurred to-day at Ballina, in Ireland, in consequence of the rejoicings which were taking place over the release of the Irish members. The police were called out to disperse the gathering, when the mob stoned them, and they fired and wounded seven of the rioters. Epping Forest. The formal opening of Epping Forest, in Essex, took place to-day with great eclat. The opening ceremony was performed by her Majesty the Queen, in the presence of a great concourse of people. An extensive procession to the scene of the proceedings was organised on the occasion. Poor Form. The Australian cricketers are now practising daily, but their form is described as poor. Money and the Markets. Consols have advanced to New Zealand securities remain at the following quotations : —Five per Cent. 10.40 Loan Five per Cent. 1880 Loan 103 ex div. ; Four and a-Half per Cent 1879-1904 Loan 103% ; Adelaide wheat ex store, 55s ; New Zealand wheat ex store, 52s ; Adelaide flour ex store, 375. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,480,000 quarters, an increase of 140,000 quarters on the last week's return. Australian tallow, best beef is quoted at 425., an advance of is., and best mutton at 43s 6d., an advance of is 6d ; hides are very flat and prices are declining. Letters for Home. The Homeward Australian and New Zealand mails via San Francisco, which left Auckland on the 28th March, were delivered in London yesterday. The Egyptian QuestionIt has transpired that an exchange of communications between the Powers which has been proceeding for some time past on the subject of the Egyptian question has resulted in an agreement being arrived at to substitute Prince Halim in the place of Ifwik (? Tewfik) Pasha, on the Egyptian throne. If this is so it will become necessary to abandon the principle of the Turkish occupation of Egypt, and to leave the initiative in Egyptian affairs to France. Another Rebellion. Cairo, May 5. A serious rising under the leadership of a false prophet at the head of a large body of men has again broken out in the Soudan. Egyptian troops have so far been powerless to quell the revolt, which is daily extending. The strength of the rebels is rapidly increasing, and it is feared they are preparing to attack Khartoum, a town of considerable size in Nubia.
