DESTRUCTION OF THE LIBRARY.
To THE EDITOE. Silt, —I am su*"e every resident in Ashburton will deplore the loss of our Library by fire, and I think the time is come when one and all should use their best endeavors! to get it replaced immediately with & good building, upon a site that will be convenient to both ourselves and strangers. 1 hjkve often been asked the whereabouts of the Reading-room and Library by visitors to Ashburton, especially during the winter nights, and after pointing out the road to it have invariably been met with the reply—" Too far—too dark." I am not aware whether the building and Contents were insured. If they were, so much the better. But one thing is certain, the committee have only to appeal to the public and try to arrange for a series of entertainments—concerts, reading 3, etc.—and they will meet with a hearty and substantial response. Trusting some influential gentlemen will take this matter in hand, I am, etc. Header. Ashburton, Jan. 30.
