RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
ASHBURTON— To-Day. (Before Joseph Res wick, Esq., R.M.) Alleged Abduction. —James Fowler, a laborer, a resident of Methven, but described in the information as Christchurch;, was charged on the sworn information of Michael Haines with the abduction of his daughter, Lucy Haines, an unmarried girl un|ler the age of sixteen years.—Sert. Fulton stated that the girl was in Christchurch, her parents resided at Alford Forest. Jnder these circumstances he would ask for a remand of eight days.—His Worship asked the defendant whether he had anything to say.—The defendant said “ I never took the girl away. I was going up in the same train with her. I was going to Rangiora, she was going to Christchcurch. ” —Sergeant Felton said the girl’s age was fifteen years and nine months, and that she represented that she was j’aarried to the defendant She had directed that letters for her should be addressed to “ Mrs Fowler, Chri-itchurch. ’j The defendant denied the marriage •-|-Hia Worship asked the defendant if he ilould get bail. —He said he could not.—Hjis Worship remanded Fowler until Fridiiy next. \\ipe DeseJition. —Thomas Hussey was charged witlj wife desertion.—Sergeant Felton said tl lat the man had been arrested on a w irrant issued by the Christchurch Bene r. His wife had seen nothing of him since March last.—Remanded to C iristchurch. CIVIL CASES. Carleton v M'Avey.—Claim Lll, for harvesting work done. Mr Purnell for plaintiff. Judgment for plaintiff for LlO and costs. Branson and Purnell v. Montgomery and Co.—Claim L 3 fid. Judgment for plaintiff, less a set off of 18s, with 8s costs. The Court then adjourned.
