UPPER ASHBURTON ROAD BOARD.

At the general meeting of the Board, as there were not sufficient members to form a quorum, the ordinary meeting was held on Friday, the 6th inst;,before the election of new members for the ensuing year. Present—Messrs M'Lean (Chairman), Harper, Stitt, and Sargent. The following correspondence was read :—From Mr J. M'Lean, in answer to the Board’s letter re exchange of land for Road Board site. From the Colonial Secretary, informing the Board that the different polling places for the district had been gazetted. From Mr S. Saunders and Mr. D. Oliver (for 0. Gr. Haw don, Esq.), informing the Board that they had great pleasure in granting Saunders’ mill and Wosterfield schoolroom respectively as polling places; the Clerk was instructed to write thanking them. After some slight discussion re rates, the Board adjourned for the election of five members for the different wards. After the election (resulting as previously reported in our columns) a meeting of the new Board took place, all the membars being present, .... T.' Mr D. M'Lean was unanimously reelected Chairman and Treasurer. A ballot was then taken for retiring members for next year, when it fell. to the lot of Messrs Harper and Sargeant tio retire. ' :He was also instructed to prepare a statement showing the receipts and expenditure in the different wards since the arbitration on the separation of this district -froin the Rangitata. : Mr Harper moved that Mr Sutherland be' at once informed of the quantity of loom stones of large size, etc., on the roads, and instructed to see to their removal. He also asked for liberty to get the stones picked off certain roads, involving the expenditure of some L 4 or LB. j Leave was unanimously granted, i It was agreed that the old standing 'resolution of “Members having the privilege of authorising work to be done in i their particular ward to the amount of LID,” should still be in force. Mr Stitt stated that Mr Hart was willing to exchange certain roads with the Board, this exchange being solely to 1 enable a purchaser of a section to obtain 'access to his land. The Board unanimously decided to use their utmost enideavors to forward such exchange, provided they were guaranteed all expenses attached to the same.

The Board having decided to hold their meetings as usual on the last Monday of the month, then adjourned.
