WILLOWBY SCHOOL.

[from a correspondent. ] The usual treat and prize giving at this | school took place on Friday, the 23rd ulfr. The room was very tastefully deocrated | for the occasion. Games were heartily | enjoyed till tea was ready (provided atf-a usual by the ladies of the district), which! repast was both excellent and- abundant- 1 After this the competition for toys com- | menced, which was so arranged - that 4 while the best runners secured the; most j valuable toys, every competitor got some*:! thing, as the winners were not allowed | to run again. A cricket ball was kindly C presented to the scholars for school 1 tice by Mrs McKenzie. Alter the sports ~~ the schoolroom was again patronised for j. the prize distribution. These prizes were \ liberally subscribed for by parents 'and ” friends. They were encouraged to do this, as every child passed in the respe<s- -j tive standards ; and the following remarks < of the Inspector (Mr Edge) speak for 4 themselves :—“ Very good progress has 1 been made by the children since last exanimation,. and the results both' in | quantity and quality are far above the - average. The teachers by their ehbrgy and steadiness of purpose have raised the school to a very satisfactory level. The ] children present entered into the wockof examination with spirit, and showed a praiseworthy desire to acquit themselves ' creditably. ” The following is the prize list ;— Standard Y— . Benjamin H. Low 1. Standard 1Y. —Emily Hayman 1, Sarah Hay man 2. Standard llL—Frederick Smith 1, Lucy Ede 2, Frank Hawkins 3, Alice Hawkins 4. Standard ll. —. Rhoda Osborne 1, Margaret Low "* and Elizabeth Heasley equal for 2nd. , Standard I.—William Parish, 1, Ellen Parish, 2, Isabel Martin, 3, Anna Wilson, 4, Mary Meredith, Elsie Low, and Thomas Harris, equal for sth. All below ' Standard I were presented with a nice book each. Sewing Prizes, Ist class. Sarah Hayman, 1, Susanna E. Low, 2, f 2nd class—Lucy Ede, Ist; 3rd class— - Margaret Low, Ist; Elizabeth Heasley, - L ;, 2nd ; 4th class, Anna Wilson, 1 ; Alice Smithers 2nd ; I. Martin, 3rd. The prizegiving was interspersed with singing-and ; recitation by the scholars, both rendered 'i in creditable style. Also nuts, lollies, and -;. biscuits were enjoyed, kindly supplied >4 gratuitously by Ashburton and Tinwald • storekeepers. Anpiopriate speeches were • delivered by Mr S. S. Chapman (chairman), Martin, Hayman, and Low. Vote* :|| of thanks to the committee, Mr S.
