Wellington, To-day. The Premier leaves for the South this evening, and will be absent for a few days. It’s only a Sweepstake. The information under the Gaming and Lotteries Act against Sir William Fitzherbert, the Hon. John Martin, and two other gentlemen, for taking part in a sweepstake on the Hutt racecourse, was heard to-day before the Magistrate and three Justices of the Peace. The following judgment was delivered by the Magistrates. They think they must convict the defendants as they think the facts alleged are proved, and that they are prohibited by law. They also think that in cases like this, persons who are likely to commit the prohibited Act would think it was prohibited by nothing but the law, and, therefore, as the only deterrent is the money lost, that should always be sufficiently substantial to deter. In this special case_they think...the eminence of the position of the defendants, and the publicity and.deliboratiop of the act, calls for the vindication of the .law. The defendants would be fined LtO each. The Hon J. Johnston, who was one of the Justices on the Bench, dissented from the decision. Manslaughter. The coroner’s inquest resulted in a verdict of manslaughter against Mary Ann Weston, iound drunk in the street, with a dead child in her arms Shipping. The ship Nelson, from Glasgow, at the Heads. All well.
