ASHBURTON CHEESE & BUTTER FACTORY.

A meeting of the provisional directors of the Cheese and Butter Factory was held last evening, at the Upper Chamber of the Town Hall, Mr Hugo Friedlander in the chair. There was a large attendance of members. Mr Poyntz reported haying disposed of ninety shares sines the last meeting. Six hundred shares had been taken up in all, and he did not anticipate that there would be the slightest difficulty in disposing j)f the remaining 400 shares. Mr Bullock suggested that a paid canvasser should be appointed to obtain shareholders, at a commission of one shilling per share, and report in fourteen days’ time. The time of the members was too much occupied to alloWj of their canvassing themselves. The motion was seconded by Mr Jame-' son, and carried. The secretary read the following telegram from Mr John Grigg, of Longbeach, re site for factory ; —“ Price for land LlB . per acre ; L 5 per acre in fully paid up shares, as a deposit; balance, seven per cent, for ten years. Will take more shares if satisfied with mode of working.” A letter was then read from Mr Bowron, stating that the plot of land referred to would make a splendid site for the factory, and recommending the committee to secure it if possible. Mr Purnell remarked that he had visisted Longbeach lately, on electioneering business, and found that, a great deal of interest was taken in the project in that district. The secretary then urged the meeting to appoint a day for the election of permanent directors ; the farmers were contmually enquiring when the directors were going to be appointed, and they ■- would get tired of the whole thing if they did not see that something definite was done. Mr Bullock moved that a general meeting be called three weeks from that day (Jan. 11) at that place, at 3 p.m., for the election of permanent directors. Seconded by Mr Pavitt, and carried. This concluded the business.
