The police authorities have definitely decided to take action against the gentlemen who were engaged in sweeps at the Hutt races. The cases will be heard in the coilrae of a day or two. Appeals Against the Recent Elections Three judges of the Supreme Court meet in a few days time to draw dp regulations under the Elections Petition Act. This step is rendered necessary as it is understood that several petitions in connection with the recent elections will be presented. Wellington Items. The Chief Justice returned from Nelson this morning. His Excellency the Governor and Lady Gordon and family leave for Lyttelton by the Hinemoa at eight o’clock to-night. They are expected to be absent eight or ten days. Mr and Mrs A. Morey and Elizabeth Stewart were to-day committed for trial on a charge of stealing a watch and the sum of L6l7s fid. A meeting will be held to -night to consider the advisability of forming a new Gas Company. Admitted to Pratique. Dunedin, To-day. The brigantine Fairlie, from Sydney, was admitted to Pratique yesterday. Oats. The New Zealand Mercantile Company received the following telegram from Melbourne :—“ Oat market still declining; suspend shipment.”
