Anniversary Day. —The thirty-first anniversary of the Province of Canterbury was observed to-day in a very unostentatious way by the public of Ashburton. Although a holiday to all intents and purposes, there seemed to be nothing in the way of amusements to attract attention, if we except the cricket match between the West Canterbury Association and the Ashburton County Club. A few persons only, however, were attracted to the match, the windy nature of the day making it rather unpleasant to be out of doors, and so probably preventing any one inclined to witness the match. The town itself presented a very deserted appearance, and business was entirely suspended.
