ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

General Rf marks. —The general condition of the upper division of this school was fully reported on a few months ag*, and, under all the circumstances, 1 do not think it necessary in the present instance to make any further remarks. A large proportion of the scholars, presented in Standards succeeded in passing fairly well in the subjects attempted. Infants’ School.—The requirements of a preparatory school are fulfilled here. All the, subjects common to such schools are taught; the work is well regulated, and the teaching, is earnest, animated, and effective. The discipline secures good order and attention. W., L. Edge, Inspector. November 14th, 1881. The report waa considered very satisfactory. FOLLOWING THE LONDON PLAN. The Secretary to the Board of Education wrote intimating that, in accordance with the request of the Committee, the Commissioner of Police had given instructions to the District Inspector for the: rendering of police assistance in enforcing 1 the compulsory clause of the Education Act. SCHOOL TREAT. Mr E. G. Wright, the Secretary stated, had offered to defray out of his own pocket, the railway fares of the school children, to his estate at Windemere, where he would throw open his grounds to the youngsters. M r Wright’s kindly offer was accepted with thanks, and the treat fixed for Thursday, December 22nd, the day before the “ breaking-up day.” MISCELLANEOUS. The annual examination was fixed for the 20th and 21st inst., and the distribution of prizes for the 23rd. A sub-com-mittee was formed to canvass the town for subscriptions towards prize fund. It was resolved that the Revs. Heall, Hands, Beattie, and Nixon should be invited to act as examiners. The Chairman and Secretary were then appointed a sub-com-mittee to purchase prizes. Messrs Orr, Hodder, and the Chairman, were appointed a sub-committee to make arrangements for a supply of refreshments for the proposed treat. The Chairman was left to fix date of a special meeting for the purpose of examining applications received for the mastership. THE MASTER’S REPORT Was read as follows : Since your last meeting the schools have been closed for one week, on account of the • prevalence of measles in the district, and. although re-opened with very few present, the,, attendance has gradually improved. During the month the schools have been opened with less than one-half the average number on the roll present twenty-five times. Number present to-day—Boys, 139; girls, 104; total, .. 243. Number on roll—Boys, 206 ; girl-, 215; ■ total, 421. Infant department—Average attendance last week—Boys, 56; girls, 4.1—97»;; number present yesterday—Boys, 63; girls, - 44 —107; ditto to-day —Boys, 70; girls, 48— 118; number on roll—Boys, 101; girls, 82— 183. Friday next being a public holiday, I shall, with your permission, close the school for that day. The report was adopted. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs St. Bill and Hodder were appointed a visiting committee for the month. ACCOUNTS AND ADJOURNMENT. The usual accounts having been passed for payment, the meeting adjourned.
