The rumor that the Imperial Parliament would meet for the dispatch of business on January 19th has been officially contradicted, and it is announced that the next session will commence on Tuesday, February 7th. Bismarck has delivered a speech in the Reichstag, in which he declared in vehehement terms his antagonism to national liberals and progressists. The tenantry on many of the large estates in the County of Limerick are persistently refusing to pay any rents to the landowners, in obedience to the manifesto issued by the Irish National Land League on the 18th October.

Seven electioneering agents and three publicans who have been convicted of bribery in connection with the general elections, have been sentenced to terms of Imprisonment varying from two to nine months, with hard labor.

The French officials at Tunis have shot an Arab servant of Mr Read, the British Cousul-General resident in that city. London, Dec. 1.

The States delegates constituting a tariff convention, which has been sitting for some time at New York, have adopted resolutions expressing approval of the protectionist policy now in operation, and urging its continuance. It is reported in the monetary press that the Government of Victoria is about immediately to place a loan of L 4,000,000 on the London market. The Times, commenting on the prospects of the proposed Victorian loan, compares Victoria with the other Australian colonies, and the comparison is to the disadvantage of Victoria.

London, Dec. 4. Following Archbishop Croke’s letter disavowing the no-rent policy advocated by the Land League’s manifesto, the Archbishop of Dublin has issued a pastoral, strongly denouncing the manifesto as an attack on the right of property by a handful of men, the bulk of whom have neither stake nor interest in the country. The pastoral was read in all the Catholic churches in Dublin, but in three of them the young men present rose in a body and left the building. The Land League is now vigorously treated as an illegal organisation. No meetings or proceedings are allowed, although the ladies’ branch of the League, under Miss Anna Parnell’s .direction, is permitted to exist. The Liberal and Catholic candidate carried the election for Berwick by 500 majority over the Conservative. The result is regarded as a victory for the Government. The municipal elections in England, however, show Conservative fains, especially in large towns. In dverpool they won six seats, and nearly everywhere the Irish v«te was given against the Liberals. In a speech delivered at Carlisle, Sir Vernon Harcourt ridiculed tho report lately published by the Standard that Mr Gladstone contemplated retiring into private life shortly. The Quarterly Review urges the Conservative press to favor the representation of the Colonies in the House of Commons. The Times regards Sir Bryan O’Loghlin’s financial proposals as an open challenge. It thinks that to take the chance of extricating the colony from the consequences of the Berry disastrous policy by the sale of land will entail a scandalous sacrifice. It condemns the effects of a protection and the immigration policy. The other Tariff Commissions, now sitting in Melbourne, South Australia, and New South Wales, especially the latter, are praised for adopting an enlightened policy on these questions. An extraordinary outrage has been

committed at Dunech House, Aberdeen- ' shire, the residence of Earl Crawford. During the night the mausoleum in which the remains of the family are interred was broken open and the body of the late Earl stolen. As a mark of hostility to the British -Government, one of the imprisoned suspects has been elected Mayor of Drogheda, Fresh agrarian outrages are reported, and further arrests have been made of persons accused of inciting the population to Boycott and refuse payment of .rent. /

The will of the late Mr Pond, the wellknown partner in the catering firm of Spiers and Pond, has been proved under L 216.000. Mr Pond provides for his family, and makes handsome donations to his employees. It is reported that General Ignatieff, .> head of- the Russian Government, has been dismissed in consequence of the recent dynamite plots. An anti-Jewish mob assailed Madame Sara B6«ihardt at Odessa. She Hung tome -Shatß jewellery among the crowd, which incensed the rioters all the more, j order was restored.

viding for the election of a Parliament for the year 1890. The Government of India have in contemplation to supersede the duties on imported cotton manufactures in favour of an income tax. Great consternation prevails in consequence, and an agitation has been commenced to induce the Executive not to carry out their intentions. An anonymous correspondent has communicated to Earl Crawford that the body of the late Earl was stolen from the mausoleum at Dunech, Aberdeenshire, in May last. The robbery was not discovered until last week, when an attempt was made by an accomplice again jto disturb the vault. The woods upon the estate have been thoroughly searched, but without result.
