MR H. J. WEEKS’ NEW MTJSIG WAREHOUSE.

Mr H. J. Weeks’ opened his ne.w and commodious premises in Tancred street yesterday. But a short time ago, comparatively speaking, Mr Weeks commenced business in Ashburton as a music teacher and musical instrument dealer: in a very small way ; but his efficiency as a teacher, coupled with his discrimination as a buyer, enabled him very quickly to contemplate a move to more central and convenient premises, and yeater' he opened up in premises in T^ n^re j| street, having a frontage of > . to the road by 29 feet, and th e w hole floor is devoted to on db - ehow . room, pretty well filled the pianoß and organs of all sorts, and descriptions from the very late novelty in Brinsmead’s to instruments by other and.. less m . eirs * Altogether, nearly of slock 18 represented. One of the novelties uus by Mr Weeks was the American orguinette, an exceedingly novel and beautiful instrument-which. is turned by the hand, but which is capable of playing any and all descriptions of music. While we were present, we were treated to some of the ever-popular “ Pinafore ”■ music, which played by the Orguiiiette certainly loses nothing of its attractive■ character. Before concluding this brief notice, ' we would mention that,Mr Weeks last night gave a promenade concert to celebrate the opening of his new premises, when the guests assembled by invitation, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The concert commenced with a grand pianoforte overture (“ Semiramide”) by Miss Kidd and Mr Morris. The piece was brilliaitly executed, and elicited loud applause. Amongst the other gems of the evening were the solo from “ Faust,” by Miss Kate Wood, a young lady who, although only about thirteen years of age, is already a skilful player; the solo “Caprice Hongvoise,” by Miss R. Friedlander, most effectively played; the trio by Mr Weeks and pupils (violin, flute, and piano), “ Home, Sweet Home,” arranged by Mr Weeks himself; the duet from “ Martha,” by the Misses Carson and Murray; the pianoforte selections on the Orguinette ; and the beautiful selection, “ Jessie’- Dream,” by some half-dozen penormers, and in which two pianos, an organ, a violin, and a flute were used. One of the features of the evening was the pianoforte solo “La Gazelle,” by Miss E. Wood, on a splendid little pianette. The big room was crowded with all the Ashburton notabilities,' and a large open-air audience congregated in front of the rooms during the evening. It was found impossible to go through the whole of the lengthy programme arranged to* tact night, tint th/> nf fhe_r>rogramme will be presented to-night and several new pieces in addition. . The admission will be free, and the attendance, no doubt, very large.
