ASHBURTON ELECTORATE.
I 4 : ’ To-day ,| at noon, about fifty people assembled in the Court House to be present at the nomination of Mr E. G. Wright for ' Ashburton, who was briefly proposed by Mr John Orr, and seconded by- Dr Trevor. i Mr Walter Martin, Returning'Officer, • then declared Mr Wright duly elected without opposition. The declaration was received with hearty applause, j Mr Wright prefaced his remarks by i stating his intention to follow the example which had just been set him of i studying brevity on that occasion. ; He regarded his return with- ' out opposition as a high compliment, paid not to any exceptional ability of his, but 1 simply the outcome of the fact that he had not studied any individual class interests, but had uniformly, so far as lay in his power, advocated the welfare of the entire district. Mr Wright touched on the fact :that this district exported: eiie quarter of the entire grain exportation of the colbny, and attributed any influence for good which he might have exercised as their member to the circumstance of having so important a constituency at his bach. When the competition accruing from the American grain growers was subjected to the test of statistics, it was proved that New Zealand had really nothing to fear from that source. [Applause.] The proceedings concluded by Mr Wright’s proposing a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, which was carried by acclamation.
