R.M. Court. —Attheß.M. Court this morning Mary Cunningham, an old offender, was charged with being drunk in a public place. Mr C. P. Cox, J, P., was on the Bench, and dismissed Mary with a caution. She is well known to the Christchurch police. Mr Wason at Tinwald. —Mr Wason will address the electors of Wakanui at the Temperance Hall, Tinwald, on Tuesday, Dec. 6. South Rakaia Sports. —At a meeting of the Loyal South Rakaia Lodge of Oddfellows held last evening, a working Committee was appointed to get up the usual annual sports to be held on Boxing Day, Dec. 26, under the auspices of the above Lodge. The following brethren were appointed to arrange a programme and collect subscriptions, viz. : Messrs T. West, J. Wilkinson, F. Dunn, E. Clark, D. Bruce, J. S. Compton, and H. Primmer, with the Lodge Secretary. After the clo rt e of the Lodge, the Committee met to make arrangements, and to decide on the best method of supplying a day’s popular amusement, when it was resolved to hold the usual programme of sports (except the horse races), and to hold an entertainment in the Town Hall in the evening, to conclude with a dance, and any surplus funds to be devoted to the Lodge building .fund. A Hint for our “ Liberty ” Correspondent.—Considerable excitement was occasioned the other afternoon at Hahndorf, -atown about seventeen miles east of Adelaide* by the public castigation of the reputed author of some alleged scurrilous paragraphs which had appeared in the Adelaide Bulletin affecting certain of the residents of the town. The persons concerned, after careful inquiry, believed they had discovered who was the correspondent of the Bulletin, and accordingly they seized him, and, having tied him up, publicly flogged him. A Brute. —At the Police Court yesterday, before Mr C. P. Cox, J.P., Rudolph Furlong was charged with being drunk in a public place. Sergeant Felton gave the man'- a very bad character. It appears the fellow is a drunken loafer, who delights in ill-using his wife, a hard-working and most respectable woman. Quite recently he capped hia previous bad usage of his wife by holding an open razor in his band a,nd threatening her life. Sergeant Felton very properly pressed for a severe ■ penalty, and his Worship fined the ruffi in the full amount, viz., 60s, with the alternative of seven days hard labor. The man elected to “ take it out,” and no doubt the punishment so well merited will have a beneficial effect. The unfortunate wife has applied for a protection order, and the matter will come before the Bench in a few days time. A Terrible Name. —lt is very ludicrious to hear people trying to converse about Wilhelmj the'violinist. Of course, now that the professor is about to pay Ashburton a nameis- constantly on people’s tongues. That is they try to get it on their tongues, but it generally goes sliding off again like water from a mackintosh or a duck’s back. The name of the famous musician is sometimes pronounced Willem, Willhelm, or simply William, but we heard a man lately who for unique pronunciation of the rather appaling name, .put all the others in the shade. He merely observed that he was glad “ William-J ” was coming.

Mr Purnell at Longbeach. —Mr C. W. Purnell.requests the electors of Wakanui to meet him at the Longbeach Main Schoolhouse on Thursday, Bth Dec.

Insurance. —Messrs Tucker and Rested notify tjiatthey have been appointed the agents in Ashburton of the South Imperial Insurance Company. Ashburton Gas, Coal, and Coke Company. —Mr J. Ward, Secretary to the above, notifies that the annual meeting of the shareholders of the same will take ple ;e at the Library Hall, Tancred street, on Monday, December 12, at 3 p.m.

Tenders. —Messrs Pooks and Sons, surveyors, &c., to Wakanui Road Board, invite Renders for re-forming.—Mr A Makeig, clerk to South Rakaia Road Board, invites tenders for valuating and compiling a ratepayers’ roll.

Bucolbuch Estate. Messrs J. T. Ford and Co. notify that they can now privately treat for all unsold farms ranging to 2,000 acres ; also for town sec Hons at,Mount Somers. Application can be made either to Messrs Ford and Co., Christchurch, or to Messrs Friedlander Bros., Ashburtonl Primitive Methodist Church. —The Primitive Methodists will hold a service to-morrow evening, at 6.30, in the Temperance Hall, Tinwald. WItHBLMM. —We are glad to be able to announce definitely, that this talented musician is coming to Ashburton. He will perform in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, Dec. 14. in conjunction with Mr Max Yogrich, the celebrated pianist, and Miss Marie Conron, described as “the charming prima donna.” For further particulars see announcement in another column.

The Canterbury and Otago Almanac.—We have received from the office of the Ti,maru Herald the Canterbury and Qtago Almanac for the year 1882. The almanac is extremely well got up, and, in addition to the calendar and diary, contains'a vast amount of useful and interesting . information. We hear that the circulation of this popular publication is yearly increasing, and we are not surprised at it.”
