A QUERY.

Sie, —A rumor is going the rounds of the town which, at the present time, requires substantial refutation. It is to the effect that Mr Ivess, one of the candidates for the Wakanni seat, was instrumental in inducing Madame Wilmot to come to Ashburton and deliver her lectures, pointing out to her that large audiences, etc., awaited her. That there is some truth in it is evidenced by the fact that Madame Wilmot is stated to have said as much publicly on Friday evening last, in the presence of some residents of the town, and that she was only debarred from accusing him, through the press, of this by not wishing to initiate a paper warfare. Another significant fact is that when application was made by the Town Hall Company for a license to the Borough Council, on Monday evening last,, and which called forth the just remarks of Councillors Harrison and Orr, Mr Ivess was conspicuous by his absence. ! I hear that l.e was the party by whom the Hall was taken for this lady lecturess. Now, I ask, is the man holding the position of one of the City Fathers, and by his countenance furthering lectures of the nature for which this lady is notorious, a fit person to send to Parliament to assist in making laws for the social and moral.wellbeing of the community ? Until this matter is cleared up I for one, and many more with me, will withhold our support from such a man. Neither shall we be satisfied with any denial given on the night before polling day. —l am, eta , Catholious.
