FREETHOUGHT AND ATHEISTIC LECTURE.

TO THE EdITOB. Sib, —Having noticed an advertisement convening meetings at our Town Hall bn the above, and other matters having an unmoral tendency, and seeing Sunday * ' evening named_as one of the nights,) I sincerely hope that the, directors of our ’ Town!Hall will re-cohsider the matter, and not aid in the desecration of the Sabbath by allowing such a meeting jto take "place, even though pecuniary necessity may perhaps compel them to sanction if oh other days. I notice the CityCoun- • cil of Christchurch have refused this lady * ‘ lecturer a license for Sunday meetings, and I think that we in Ashburton are; as ■ ' desirous of rightly observing the Lord’s day as ‘our fellow colonists in Christchurch. Lectures on such subjects are Sure to draw large crowds of the young .and thoughtless, and are generally the 'meahs of (implanting ideas which must tend to lo.wer , rather than elevate the morality of the masses. They are danger- . t ous to promulgate at any time, and above all on the Sabbath day. I hope this may - be, jthe, means of causing some others; to take action, in the matter, and sooner than the Town Hall Company should be at any pecuniary loss, I for one] would throw! in my mite towards the letting fee, sootier than see it opened on Sunday night for - this object. —I am, etc., Sabbath Obsebveb.
