ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Council was held this afternoon. Present—Messrs W. C. Walker, D. Cameron, H. T. Winter, E. G. Wright, J. Jackson, T. Bullock, and John Lambie. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. The Chairman stated the Council met to-day under clause 54 of the Counties Act, and the principal business would be to elect a Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr E. G. Wright said that as Mr Walker had acted so satisfactorily during the term of his office he had very great pleasure in proposing him as Chairman. In doing so he spoke of the energetic and faithful way in which he had acted in the past. Mr Cameron had great pleasure in seconding the resolution. Mr Jackson also endorsed the remarks of Mr Wright. The motion on being put was carried unanimously. Mr Walker acknowledged the compliment, and trusted he would always endeavor to earn the same consideration of the members of the Council in the future as had been given to him in the past. He thanked the Council for the honor of reelecting him as their Chairman. APOLOGY. A letter was received from Mr Hugo Friedlander apologising for his absence, which was c insed through important business matters outside the province. REPORTING PROGRESS. A return of the business done by the Chairman since the last meeting of the Council was laid on the table and approved of. TENDERS. The following tenders for making subsidary water-courses for the Ashburton and Rakaia plains water supply, 106 miles, were opened and accepted : —No. I—J. Devery, Is per chain ; No. 2—J. Devery, Is per chain ; No. 3—Mulligan, Is per chain ; Ni. 4—W. Furneaux and Co., Is 4d per chain ; No. 5—W. Furneaux and Co., Is 5d per chain. MOUNT SOMERS WATER SUPPLY. It was resolved to accept 0. Soland’s tender of 3s per chain for the work. DISPUTED TENDER. The successful tenderer for fluming, at the last meeting of the Council not having complied with the tender sent in by him, it was resolved to call for fresh tenders, to be sent in within one week, and the Chairman to have power to accept the same. RAKAIA WATER SUPPLY. A letter was read from Mr M'Donald, asking for certain deviations of the water races in the South Rakaia district. It was resolved to defer the matter until the next ordinary meeting. ADJOURNMENT. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the Council on the 7th December, at 11 a.m. SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting was then held to consider the question of closing a road in the Mount Hutt road district. It was resolved that the decision of the ratepayers be confirmed.
