Catholic Charitable Institute. Patea, To-day. Bishop Redwood having directed a collection to be made throughout the diocese for establishing a Catholic childrens’ charitable institution at Nelson, Ll 9 was subscribed here.

A Proud Position. G. F. Sherwood has been elected the first Mayor of Patea. Well Received. Napier, To-day. Mr Sutton addressed the electors of Clive last night. He was enthusiastically received, and obtained a unanimous vote of confidence. Two Gone. Tauranga, To-day. A native named Tawhinga, was drowned at Ohinemutu, on Monday night. He went into a hot spring to bathe, and apparently fell asleep. He was found drowned on the following morning. Soon afterwards, a Maori woman was found drowned in a hot bath, near the post-office, under similar circumstances. Electoral. Invercargill, To-day. Mr Shanks, the late member, has retired from the Mataura contest. Mr Richardson and Captain McKenzie were at Mataura last night, and both secured votes of confidence. The former said that had he been in the Assembly last year he should have supported the Hall Ministry. The Mataura Electoral Roll contains 1,500 names. The analysis of the Invercargill Roll is as follows :—Freehold, 918 ; residential, 855.

A Town Flooded with Rain Water. Campbelltown, To-day.

The Bluff township was flooded last night. There was an extraordinary fall of rain, and the water was three feet deep in some places.
