SIR GREY AT AUCKLAND.

Sir George Grey addressed the City East electors last night. There was a densely crowded audience, and Sir George met with a most flattering reception after his long silence. In the course of his address the veteran knight of Eawau referred to the railways, and public works policy, and expressed the opinion -that the present railway system was made for individuals and not for the general public. He spoke of the pre-emptive right system in Canterbury and its abuses of which Mr Sealey’s pamphlet would give them some notion. The Government had had no policy. He spoke of the South Island as having everything its own way, and said owing to its accession of votes it would control everything. He thought Te Whiti should have been locked up dong ago, but was sorry to see that it had/Been done just now, just before a 'general election. He said his blood fairly.bdiled when he saw the fine buildings and rail* ways in the South, as compared tojthe miserable state of things in Auckland, which was behind In every department. No questions were put to the candidate. A vote of thanks and a motion pledging the meeting to use their utmost exertions to secure his return for City East was carried unanimously.
