NEWS PROM THE FRONT.
[by TBLEGBApi] [from the Special reporter op the press ASSOCIATION.] PuNGABEHtr, To-day. Mr Bryce left for Parihaka at 6.30 this morning. The Maoris state that coin, greenstone, etc., to the value of L3OO were taken during the constabulary search. About 120 stand of arms have been taken during Mr Bryce’s visit to Manaia. One Constabulary company has just been marched into the Pah with Mr Bryce for what purpose is not known. The vol* unteers ate drilling. Everything is quiet. A ten o’clock, a.hi.j Te Whetu and five other chiefs of different tribes were atrested, and are now in the gaol tent. The Constabulary are, in the marae looking for the others. Colonel Roberts with Major Mair is Superintending from the top ot the whare. Major Tuke and Captain Morrison were also present. The other chiefs were looked for but could not be identified. Only sixty guns were taken at Manaia, but a large quantity of powder and cartridges was also seized. Mr Bryce informs me that the Constabulary will commence making a road through Parihaka after dinner. The natives will not disperse. Later. The chiefs arrested are TitokOward, Rahgipdatioakd, Patutiapai; HataUo, Horiaruo Hi, Makuki, and Kihphipikeke. These prisoners were taken with others on Saturday, and will, Mr Bryce informs me, probably be sent to New Plymouth. The reason why the prisoners are not yet sent to gaol is that Mr Bryce fears that all the natives at Parihaka would proceed there and squat on the streets.
