HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held last evening, at the usual place—Mr Stephenson in the chair. The Secretary reported that he had received a subscription from his Worship the Mayor for the last year. Mr B. C. Smith had offered a prize of 5s for the best collection of vegetables sent in by amateurs only, and Mr Bullock had offered (through Mr Broomfield) a prize of 7s fid for the beat dish of peas (about one pint), to be submitted by amateurs only. Mr McMaster had offered a lamb for the best collection of potatoes (open to all). The entries for cottage garden prize had now closed. There were nine entries for the Society’s prize (class 1, for those who cultivated in their spare time but did not employ labor), and three for the prize open to all, class 2. It was resolved that all matters connected with the cottage garden prize be left to the sub-committee and the judges. Sundry accounts wore passed for payment.

Mr Alfred Harrison then read an interesting paper, from an excellent little work entitled “ The Pern Garden,” on the cultivation of greenhouse and stove ferns, and was accorded a vote of thanks. The proceedings then terminated.
