MOUNT SOMERS MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.
A public meeting was held last Saturday night at Mr John Hood’s Hotel for the purpose of considering the advisability of forming a society for the mutual benefit of the young men of the Mount Somers district. There was a good number present, and Mr W. H. Puddicombe was voted to the chair.
After some conversation regarding the object of the meeting, it was resolved—- “ That all who wish to join the above Society shall record their names at once and pay an entrance fee of 2s 6d.” Fifteen members were at once enrolled. It was also resolved—“ That Mr A. Harvey write to the Chairman of the Leeston Society for a copy of their rules, to be laid before the next meeting, to be held at the Mount Somers School on Saturday, Auguat'6th.” It was also resolved that Mr David Scott inform those of the residents of Alford Forest likely to join the above Society that the members of the Mount Somers Society are anxious to amalgamate with the Alford Forest Society, and to urge upon albto try and meet the Mount Somers people at the next meeting, when the name of the Society and place of meeting would be decided upon ; as, if the Alford Forest Society amalgamate with Mount Somers it was thought advisable to name the Society “ The,. Mount Somers and Alford Forest Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Society,” and to hold the meetings fortnightly at Mount Somers and Alford Forest alternately. After a vote of thanks to the Chairman, a very interesting meeting terminated.
