THE REVISED NEW TESTAMENT.

To the Editor. Sir, —Gan you inform your readers what alteration has been made in the revised edition of the New Testament of that portion which contains our finest moral maxim, often called the “ golden rule,” viz., “As ye would that men should do unto you do ye even so unto them ? ” The alteration which I hear the revisers of the New Testament have made in the above maxim, at the instance of many well regulated journals and eminent politicians, will now read—“ As ye would that men should do unto you do ye even so unto them (except they be Chinamen). ” As our spiritual teachers are quite silent while the anti-Chinese agitation is proceeding I presume the alteration abovementioned is a fact.— I am, &c., Inquirer. [We believe that the passage referred to stands the same in the revised New Testament as in the authorised version. Those who neglect to apply it to Chinamen perhaps dp so on the ground that it is a heathen maxim. It is so, and may be found in the writings of the Creek rhetorician Isocrates, more than 300 years before the Christian era. For all that we do not see why it should not apply to Chinamen as well as to other people.— Ed. <?.]
