THE PLOUGHING MATCH DINNER.
To thb Editor Slß,—ln the issue of the Ashburton Mail of the 19th inat. is a letter on “ Ploughing match arrangements, signed “R. W. Shearman." As a simple ploughman. I would ask you to insert a ■ few lines in your paper to give expression to my feelings on the subject. Mr Shearman states that, in the year 185(1 he was a “ pantry .boy. ” Supposing in the year 1 he had been a scullion maid, does that affect Mr Sam Brown’s letter in the Guardian— “ Ploughing Arrangements? ” In that letter ..Mr Brown simply argues that the catering for the dinner ehould he a matter for‘“public tender.” Mr Jameson in his letter entirely exonerates himself from any charge of “ favoritism and patronage. ” But, sir, does that exonerate the committee of the Agricultural Association, or rather, I .should say, justify them in selecting any one publican to cater for the dinner 1 It appear* to mo that Mr Shearman, in his letter, however satirical it may appear, fails to answer the simple question —-Should not “ every and all Ploughing “ Match Dinners be open, to public tender.”—l am, Ac., Odd Turnips. Ashburton,' July 20th, 1881. [The subject now being thoroughly ventilated, the discussion, so far as our columns are concerned, must cease.—Ed. ft] *
