LONGBEACH ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday last. Messrs T. Taylor ('acting-chairman), Carter, and Chapman being present. The following correspondence was read: —From the Hon, the Colonial Secretary, stating that the district had been divided into five wards, the proclamation appearing in the Gazette published on the 9th of June last.—The letter was ordered to be

acknowledged, and the Clerk was directed to obtain full written instructions from the Board’s solicitor as to how the affairs of the district should now be managed.— From Mr David Evans, complaining that, owing to a dam existing in the County Council's new gone fence drain, the water during the late heavy rainfall had been turned out of the drain on to a road line adjoining his land, much damage to which had resulted ; there was upwards of twelve thousand cubic yards of road line and private land washed out to sea. The Clerk was instructed to write to the County Council, asking that this defect in the drain may be remedied, and also that the bridges over the drain may be made larger.—From five ratepayers, petitioning that about two miles of the Coldstream road may be formed. The Surveyor was ordered to inspect the road line and report at next meeting. The Surveyor reported that the shingling of Dobson’s and the Twenty-one Drain roads, also the re-formation of Islesworth road had been satisfactorily completed. A number of minor matters were also reported upon, and instructions given in each case. On the motion of Messrs Carter and Chapman it was decided “ That in order that small repairs of an urgent character may be at once attended to the Surveyor may, on his own responsibility, have any piece of work done the cost of which does not exceed three pounds, and the Surveyor and Chairman, or acting Chairman, together, to the value of five pounds. ” The Surveyor was instructed, on the motion of Messrs Carter and Chapman, to have certain footpaths and side-channels formed at Tinwald. Tenders wore opened for the re-forma-tion of part of the Waterton road and side channelling of the Great South road, and that of Mr John Black accepted. Tenders were also received for clearing watercresses out of the side drain of Boundary road, but none of them were accepted, pending a further report in the matter. A voluminous financial statement, prepared by the Treasurer, showing exactly iow each ward stood as to money previously expended, works in hand, and cash to credit or otherwise, was laid on the table, and the Clerk was directed to send a copy of the same to the Chairman, who is still absent in Melbourne. Accounts, amounting to L2BO 10s 9d, were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
