THE ATTEMPT ON THE LIFE OF THE PRESIDENT OF AMERICA.

Critical State of the Victim. [bv cable] Washington, July 3. Deep and universal anxiety is felt throughout the States at the state of the President’s health. Telegrams have been received from all European Courts expressing sympathy with him. It now transpires that the would-be assassin Gintean was at one time a Consular officer, but was dismissed from his position. Evening. The latest bulletin regarding the President reports that his condition is unchanged. The bullet, it has been ascertained, has pierced the liver, and now lies embedded in the abdomen. From Gintean’s conduct since his arrest it is believed he is insane. Telegrams of condolence have been received by General Garfield from the Queen, Prince of Wales, and Marquis of Lome. Washington, July 4. A bulletin issued this morning reports that President Garfield has not passed so good a night, having only dozed at intervals. He has complained of pains in the abdomen, which the doctors pronounce to be symptoms of tympanites or distention of the abdomen. London, July 4. The attempt on the life of the President of America has caused a profound sensation throughout Europe, and universal sympathy is expressed at his present precarious condition.
