[per press association.] j Gaylan’a Circus. Auckland. June 25. , Private letters received by the last mail state that Gaylan’s Colossal Circus, now doing splendid business in America, leaves in September for this colony and Australia in a specially chartered steamer. The circus is said to be even larger and more complete than Cole’s, and it has associated with it part of Barnum’s celebrated museum of curiosities, as well as valauble menageries of animals. The chartered steamer will carry the circus from place to place, the season being a limited one. Attempted Suicide. Collerick, the telegraph operator, who attempted suicide at Whangaroa, got two bottles of chlorodyne, but these were found on him and and taken away from him. He was to be brought down to be committed to the asylum. He says he is determined to commit suicide. Robbery of £4OO. A robbery of L4OO has taken place from the Kauro hotel, Whangarei. Inquest. At an inquest oh' the body of Mary Galvan, found' drowned in the harbor, an open verdict" was returned. Her husband was killed at Epsom some years ago. Quarantined Passengers. . , The Customs launch has left Motuekihi to release the quarantined passengers. Demand for Healthy Teachers. The Board of Education rejected a motion that candidates for employment as teachers should produce medical certificates. The Eowena. New Plymouth, Saturday. The steamer Rowena still lies on the South Spit, Waitara. The owner will proceed to Auckland to get appliances for launching her. Death of Dr Skae. Wellington, Saturday. Dr Skae, Inspector of Lunatic Asylums, who has been suffering from an attack of erysipelas, died to-day. He leaves a wife and large family. Heavy Snow. Greymouth, Yesterday. A cold wave swept over Greymouth last night. It was raining about eight o’clock, when a sudden chill took place, and a sharp hailstorm followed for some time. About half-past eight it began to snow heavily in large flakes, and continued till about 11.30, when about three inches of snow covered the roofs of the houses and other exposed places. It set in cold about 1 o’clock, and in the ing the snow which had fallen in the night was frozen hard. Accidents. An accident occurred at a quarry yesterday to a large steam derrick. One _of the wheels was stripped of cogs, which flew in every direction, the driver escaping by a miracle. There was also another accident while drying some glycerine, which exploded, but without doing any damage. Snow. Dunedin, Yesterday. Two inches of snow foil last night. Otago Declines. Dunedin, To.day. The Otago Rugby Union decline to participate in the proposed football tour through Australia. Committed. William Casey has been committed for trial for the larceny of a watch. Compensation Wanted. ' -It- is understood that another large case of compensation is instituted against the Corporation in 'connection with the Silverstream water race. Sporting. The committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club offered the Forbury Park Company L 26,000 for the racecourse, but no definite agreement was come to, as the company are asking L 30,000. The Jockey Club agreed to let the offer stand for six months, pending the company accepting it.
