The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas, et PrevalEbit. MONDAY, JUNE 27, 1881.

TOWN EDITION. [lssued at 5.30 p.m.]

Earthquake. —A smart shock of earthquake was felt in Ashburton yesterday morning at 5.25. No damage was done. Reid and Gray’s Ploughs. —We find that these makers’ double-furrow plough took the champion prize for the best work in the field at the Waikouaiti Ploughing Match, held last week, beating all other competitors. Appointment. —We learn that Mr W. H. Puddicombe has been appointed Postmaster at Mount Somers, and the Post Office of that district wtll henceforth be at the store of the above gentleman. Proposed New Theatre. —We understand that Mr T. Quill proposes, if sufficient inducement is offered, to build, on the site of the shop burnt down last week, a brick theatre, capable of holding 900 persons. Ploughing Match. —Our readers are reminded that the meeting of the Association will be held to-morrow, for the purpose of considering the details in connection with the proposed ploughing match in Ashburton.

Auction Sale.— On Saturday Mr T. Bullock sold by auction, at his rooms, East street, a number of pictures and a miscellaneous lot of furniture. There was a fair attendance, and pretty good prices ware realised. The Late Fire in Peter Street.— The insurances on Mr Ruxton’s stock and furniture are as follows :—L3OO in the Transatlantic, and Ll5O in the Standard offices. He estimates his loss at between L7OO and LBOO. In reference to the other insurances which were stated in Saturday’s issue, we find that one of them only applied to other private property belonging to Mr Ruxton, and in no way covered his goods or furniture in the shop that was burnt. The information given us that two ether insurances of L2OO each had been effected on Mr Ruxton’s furniture and stock is therefore incorrect. Masonic. The installation of the officers of St. John’s Lodge takes place to-morrow night, at the Masonic Hall. The D.D.G.M. Bro. Thomson will perform the ceremony, and it is hoped there will be a large attendance of brethren from the sister lodges. At the conclusion, the usual banquet provided by the officers of the Lodge will be held in the Hall, and visiting brethren and others are cordially invited. Football. —Amatch between the boys of the Ashburton High School and those of the Timaru High School was played last Saturday, at Timaru. The visitors could make very little show against their older and heavier opponents, who scored five goals and twelve touchdowns against nil. The ground was in very bad order, being excessively wet. Jones, Cole, Campbell, and Tate played well for Timaru, and Hodder, Curtis, Felton, Pavitt, and the brothers Itting did their level best to prevent the inevitable defeat. After the match, the visitors were entertained by their opponents at a good luncheon given at the Royal Hotel.
