THE OUTFALL DRAIN.
This work, we are given to understand, is now completed. As we previously stated, the drain starts at the south side of Havelock street and continues along the East Belt to the river. From the former point to Dobson street it is of brickwork, the remainder of the drain being an open ditch. Its dimensions are z feet 8 inches in width, with a height of 4 feet, it being constructed as follows, namely :—With concrete bottom, of a depth of 1 foot, side walls of brick, to a height of 2 feet 4 inches, and circular arch in brick, inches in thickness, and surmounted by a layer of cement concrete 4 inches thick. There are 12 pipe connections, with syphon-trap and gratings, the pipes used being 9-inch glazed earthenware, and there are also two manholes in the drain for cleaningout purposes. The depth of the cutting for the drain between Moore and Kermode streets is 12 feet, and the drain has been constructed on a level which will permit of its being continued the full length of the Belt to the river at
any future date. In making this cutting the workmen came upon several trees buried beneath the surface, at about a depth of 4 feet, all of which were in a good state of preservation, and which had to be cut to remove them. But little inconvenience has been occasioned to the public during the construction of the drain in the matter of the removal of rain water, provisions in this respect having been made by the contractor, who also made provision for the carrying off of the whole of the brewery drainage. The cost of the work is Li,507, and the contractor is Mr Bradley, the work being supervised by the Borough Engineer. We learn that the bottom of the open part of the drain is of loose shingle, and up to the present the water has filtered through this instead of flowing out to the river. Under these circumstances it will be necessary for the Council to put in a bottom. Doubtless this matter will receive the attention of the Engineer.
