Auckland. To-day; A fire at Mr M'Lean’s, Tencourt, . beyond Cambridge, destroyed a large two- ‘ storey bunding, consisting of stables and < hay-loft, and ten-horsepower engine and chaff-cutter, and LIOO worth of grass seed and implements. The fire originated in the loft, but the cause is unknown. The - property was insured in the New Zealand office. The Auckland Grammar School. At a meeting of the Grammar School Board of Governors to-day, Mr Tole, U.H.R., said ho heard that boys in warehouses were being induced to sign a memorial against the University members of the Board. He would guarantee to get ten signatures for those members to every one procured against them. ? Sir George and the Large Landholders. - At the Waste Lands Board meeting, Mr Firth asked whether Sir George Grey had applied to inspect the books of the Board in answer to Mr Firth’s challenge to him to prove his statement that the Board favored big landholders. The reply was that no application had been made. Standing Alone. Grahamstown, To-day A meeting of the Thames Naval Brigade was held yesterday. The proposition of. the Wellington Brigade to constitute all the naval corps into one body was discussed, and a resolution was carried in favor of the Thames Brigade remaining independent, and Captain Wildman was instructed to communicate with Captain Johnston of the Defence Office on the subject. The Supreme Court. Timaru, To-day. The Supremo Court opened this morning, with 16 prisoners to be tried. George Robson, for stealing from the person, got nine months George -Bendford, forgery, three months ; John Quinn, two years’ penal servitude ; Edward Ford, larceny, six months. An Hotel Burnt Down. The Sportsman’s Arms’ Hotel, Salt , 1 water Greek, was burnt down at half-pas . 4 this morning. No lives- lost.
