CRICKET.

THE PAST SEASON. The cricket seven is past and gone, but may be looked.back to by members of the Ashburton Club as the moat successful the Ashburton cricketers have yet known. The amalgamation of the Borough .and County Cliibs previous to the commencement of the season; added to the fact that the, Club has had a most indefatigable secretary atj affaire!, _ and an enthusiastic' committee, has raised the total ' on the roll of ' membership to fifty-five members. - The Domain Board’s grant to the Club fori the improvement of tblb ; ground.' and . the erection of a pavillion, the! .want, of which was previously felt very severely, was applied to that purpose, with additions to the funds from the Club’s treasury, and the result has proved'a great boon to the Club. The attendance at practice bore a marked improvement on previous years, and good results have consequently followed. A few evening matches wereiplayed with the newly-constituted Borough Club, and much .interest was manifested in them ; but these are not included in the averages appended, nterely i .being instituted for practice.' During the season, the Club have played ten matches with the following; results :—Won, 6.; lost, 1; drawn, 3 (in favor of the Club). The result is which the Club may. justly feel proud. A great improvement in fielding hss been shown, whilst that the bowling department.has received its fair share of attention, the averages show. The bowling, as of old, has been below the mark, notwithstanding the addition of two new trundlers in tho shape, of Messrs Wix and Jepfyson, the former swift, with a round arm delivery, and.who, with a good field, with the placing of which he is thoroughly conyecsaht, has proved himself effective, Jephspn, a medium bowler (over arm), whp is possessed of great. judgment, baa also; been, successful. Andrews has hud the, principal share of the bowling, and is stiff; dangerous, whilst,* Shury has proved himself a useful change, and bids fair to take .aprominent part in the next season Al!. nooks, Hodder, and McLaren have ahp. tried .their, powers in this direction, aqd-with.fsiiCr. results, Owing, however, to the incomplete record, which has been kept., pi; fhe analysis, we are unable to place the same before puri readers. Notwithstanding that a visible improvement was noticeable in the batting department, the i’ hdl Bud’.’.im the,;majority of the matches ..have presented, .but a mournful spt>ctacle. . .Amo».heada the lißt with a good' ayeragp, ■; but it is * questionable whether hie would have, maintained it had he played ;|n all the matches.
