RANGITATA TRAFFIC BRIDGE.

+ Yesterday, at the meeting of the Gera! dine County Council, in le this matter, r letter was read from the Ashburtor County Council, and also a report of tin last meeting of the committee appointed in the matter. A letter was received from the Hon. the Minister for Public Works in which thatgentleman wrote as follows : “ No doubt the fracture of throe of those piles while being driven afforded some justification for the objection to their use, but as it is very desirable that If possible the loss from the condemnation of material procured at so great expense should bo avoided, will yoa allow mo to suggest that a further trial should bo made, and that say 12 piles should be driven either in their present condition or with such alterations as the engineer may think it right to make. 1 venture to think that such a further fv : >| is worth, making, and .1 shall !■. The lolin viug resolution was passed by the Council : “ That, in reply to the Minister 11 of Public Works’ under date April 29th, 1881, this Council, taking into consideration the undoubted fact that the use of solid iron pipes in the Rangitata river has been condemned, not only by the engineer consulted (Mr Higgenson), but by Mr Rush, the contractor for the present bridge, does not feel justified in expending County funds on the experiment indicated in the letter from the Hon. Minister for Public Works.”
