London, May 14 The Bey of Tunis has made a communication to the Powers, in which he protests that his consent to the treaty which has been concluded with France was extorted from him by the French commander. Italian Politics. Rome, May 15. The resignation of the Liberal members of the Italian Ministry have been accepted by King Humbert, and Signor Sella has been charged with the formation of a new Administration. What the Porte says. Constantinople, May 15. The Porte has addressed the French Government on the subject of the Treaty which has been entered into with the Bey of Tunis. The communication denies that the Bey was competent to conclude such a treaty without the consent of the Sultan. AUSTRALIAN. [per bbdteb’s agency.] The Reform Bill. Melbourne, To-day. It has transpired that at a Cabinet Council, held yesterday, it was decided to accept the Reform Bill as returned by the Legislative Council, subject to a L2O rating qualification for occupiers, and some other modifications being adopted. The Hon. Graham Berry made a speech last night, in which (in reference to the decision of the Cabinet) he said that the acceptance of the Legislative Council’s amendments would not, he feared, bring about a final settlement of the Reform question. H-M-S, Bacchante in a Gale. Albany, May 16. H.M.S. Bacchante, with Princes Albert Victor and George of Wales on board, arrived in King George’s Sound to-day with her rudder disabled. She parted company with the detached squadron on Thursday last, the 12th inst. The following information was supplied by the officers of the Bacchante —After leaving the Cape the detached squadron met with favorable weather until Wednesday last, the nth instant, when the wind freshened and increased to a heavy gale during the night. On Thursday morning a heavy sea struck the Bacchante, carrying away one of the lifeboats, and at midday another sea broke on board, disabling the steering gear. A jury rudder was rigged, and the Bacchante made for King George’s Sound to repair damage. She leaves as soon as possible for Cape Otway, where the squadron rendezvous on the 19th instant. The Royal Princes are in good health. No casualties to life occurred on the nth and 12th inst. during the storm.

NEW ZEALAND [per press association.] Another Unfortunate. Auckland, To-day. It has transpired that James Quinlan shipped as fireman aboard the Tararua, at Port Chalmers. He leaves a widowed mother, in Auckland, destitute, having supported her for years. Quinlan was unmarried. Census Returns, Gisborne, To-day. The census retui’nsshow the total European and Maori population of Cook County to be 7,054. The Maori population exceeds the European by 610. The total population of the Borough of Gisborne is 1,000. Water. Napier, To-day. The Borough Council, in committee last night, adopted the proposal tor an extension of the water supply to the hill portion of the town, at an estimated cost of LIO,OOO. Divorce Court. Wellington, To-day. A rule nisi was granted in the case of Weston v. Weston, Christchurch. The Tararua Enquiry. Dunedin, To-day. Judgment in rc the Tararua will not be given for two or three days. More Mismanagement. -Captain Cameron, in evidence to-day, stated that the boats on board the Tararua were insufficient to hold all the people. Double-Furrow Ploughs. Messrs Reid and Gray get a gold medal at the Melbourne Exhibition for doublefurrow ploughs. _
