LOCAL INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION

The monthly meeting of this Association was held last evening, Mr Hodder presiding, and there being a good attendance. The Secretary reported the receipt from the Colonial Secretary of a report on the Ashburton Industrial Exhibition by the Commissioner, Mr Wakefield. The sub-committee appointed in the matter of the formation of the joint stock company for the assistance of persons willing to undertake the establishment of local industries, reported as follows “ Your Committee beg to report that In answer to their solicitation from persons desiring assistance towards perfecting any industry, they received one application from a person desirous of establishing a tannery ; and although the information afforded is conclusive proof that the said industry would be highly remunerative, yet your Committee do not feel disposed to recommend the formation of a company to assist in this particular instance, since the assistance required would be so great compared with what the applicant himself could furnish, that it would be necessary that the company started the industry itself. The application, therefore, seems more within the compass of private enterprise. As there are a number ol industries yet to consider and repori upon, your Committee would request an extension of time to bring up a fullei report.—We have, &c., Thos. Riches Hoddeb, Chairman. The Chairman, in reply, aaid the industry mentioned in the report was i tannery. The question of whether thi industry could not be undertaken by thi association as a joint stock company hac arisen. That the project was a payinj concern there had been full proof. The report was received and adopted. A lengthy discussion as to creameries was followed by the passing of the follow ing resolution:—“That meetings o ; farmers be called at Willowby, Wakanui , and Waterton, for the special object o eliciting information respecting cream

Mr Poyntz introduced statistics re establishment of a fruit preserving company shewing an outlay of L 2,193 during the first three years, and receipts to the extent of L 3,500. , It was resolved on the motion of Dr t Stewart—“ That initiatory steps be taken towards forming a company to work a 3 tannery, and that a meeting of the public be called on May 25th, when the necessary information shall be laid before 5 them, and that Messrs Hodder, Bradley, T Potter, Steele, Silcock, Mayo, C.
