ECCLESIASTICAL INTOLERANCE.
To the Editor. Sir, —I read with disgust a paragraph in your paper headed “Uncharitable,” wherein Mr Spurgeon asserts that the late unfortunate passengers in the Tararua perished on account of their sins. As a matter of course, Mr Spurgeon includes the rev. gentlemen that perished in the ill-fated ship. I would ask Mr S. who we are to believe in, if revs, are so wicked as to deserve to have their lives taken from them by the visitation of God, in such a way. Is ic worthwhile for anyone to go and hear them preach 1 Judging from Mr Spurgeon’s remarks, I doubt whether he believes what he is preaching about. The Rev. Mr Sidey, of Napier, makes use of similar remarks from the pulpit, and endeavors to impeach the Union Shipping Company, by saying the “ almighty dollar ” is their greatest consideration. Such remarks, I think, are sufficient to deter any sensible person from going to hear either of the above divines preach, and are calculated to injure the cause which they are supposed to have at heart. —I am, &c,, Common Sense.
